6 Ways to Improve Your Photoshop Skills – Quick Tips

ways to improve your photoshop skills

Photoshop is an extremely useful tool for design professionals. This photo editing software enables you to bring digital art to life. While Photoshop is a commonly-used design tool, you will need practice and training to make the most of it. Considering it’s a skill you can develop over time, here are 6 ways to improve your photoshop skills.

1.   Paste in Place

When you make a selection in your document, copy the selection with the shortcut ‘ctrl+c’ or ‘cmd+c,’ depending on whether you’re using Windows or Mac. After that, use the shortcut ‘ctrl+shift+v’ or ‘cmd+shift+v’ to paste the selected item in place into your document. This way, the copied part will be in the same position as in the original document.

2.   Enable the History for Layer Visibility

If you prefer previewing different layers, you must make sure to make adjustments to prevent losing your settings for layer visibility. Open the History options. There, you’ll find a dialogue box that will allow you to undo your layer visibility changes. After that, you can press ‘ctrl+alt+Z’ or ‘cmd+alt+Z’ to undo layer visibility changes while including them in the history.

3.   Use Bird’s Eye View for Edge Refinement or Cloning

When working on edge refinement or cloning, you will need to zoom into your document to get the details right. As a result, you may not be able to get a good reference for the complete picture. Furthermore, it can become tedious navigating through a highly zoomed-in document. Therefore, you can use the Bird’s Eye View feature to temporarily zoom out of your document by holding down the ‘H’ key on the keyboard and clicking with your mouse. Letting go of the key will revert the document back to the zoomed-in state. This is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to improve your photoshop skills by improving product quality.

4.   Use the Alt Key to Copy Layer Styles

Speed is necessary when you have multiple projects to complete within tight deadlines. Therefore, you copy layer styles fast by holding down the ‘alt’ key on the keyboard and dragging the layer panel’s FX icon from the layer that has the styles to another.

5.   Move Selections Using Your Space Bar

Holding down the ‘space bar’ can save you a lot of time when moving your selections around in your canvas. This works when using various standard tools on Photoshop.

6.   Automate Manipulation Actions

Automate manipulation actions by recording macros of common tasks. You can record your own actions via the Actions panel on the software.

Last Words on Ways to Improve Your Photoshop Skills

While it’s important to implement these ways to improve your photoshop skills, it’s equally necessary to devote time to practicing techniques and developing your skills on the whole.
