Remote learning, also known as distance learning, refers to the teaching of learners who might not necessarily be physically present in a traditional schoolroom. Traditionally, this used to mean correspondence classes where the student corresponded via mail with the teacher. These days, it typically includes online education. This form of education has many advantages but it can also have some disadvantages depending on your goals.
One of the most obvious advantages of remote learning is that it allows you to attend classes without having to actually be in attendance. This of course does not mean that the class is not offered to students in your district. If your district offers remote learning programs, they are likely offering this type of classes to their students as well.
However, there are also some school districts that have seen a decline in the number of people enrolled in their traditional classrooms. In some cases, it has been students themselves that have decided to take advantage of the remote option. For them, it might be an added bonus if the course is offered in their hometown too. It is especially appealing to students living far away from home. If they can attend a school they already enjoy going to, it can make their high school experience all the better for them in the long run.
On the other hand, remote learning might not appeal as much to adults who would rather not sit in a classroom and learn from a computer screen. They can find the learning process impersonal and even boring. With a traditional classroom, their social network might be limited. When you can’t connect with people you may come into contact with during the course of your studies, you tend to lose interest. On the other hand, with online learning, adult learners can still access social networks to keep up with friends and colleagues.
Another disadvantage of traditional classroom learning experiences is that teachers may not have the opportunity to bring in other subject matter expertise from other fields to supplement what their students are learning. This is true whether the teaching is for kids or adults. With distance learning experiences, however, teachers are able to bring in other subject matter experts from the field. Teachers can discuss literature with other academics. Teachers can read from non-traditional resources such as journals and professional journals. All of these can help to supplement what the students are learning in the classroom.
One big disadvantage of traditional classroom teaching is that students can easily become bored. They are given the same materials each time and they can become easily bored by watching the same video or reading the same book. This happens because it is just too easy to fall into a pattern where the lessons seem the same to them. They stop paying attention and they become frustrated.
A third drawback is that traditional classroom courses can be expensive and complicated. Online courses can be cheaper, easier to set up, and they do not require the same level of dedication as a traditional classroom course. That’s why some people choose to do their courses online, rather than teaching in a classroom. By doing so, the teacher does not have to purchase teaching materials as part of the classroom requirement. In fact, there is no need for any additional instructional design, guidance, testing, or supervision.
This is why remote learning has become popular with so many people. The main reason is that they are convenient. Students can take the courses at their own pace, and they can learn at their own speed. It’s much cheaper, easier, and more flexible, as well. If you’re a teacher who wants to move from a traditional classroom to a distance learning program, you should consider starting your distance education program with a lesson plan designed to help you complete your requirements.
